Outline of Oil Storage Tanks Regulations

Non Fire Rated Buildings and Boundaries

  • A non-fire rated boundary is less than 30 minutes fire protection.

  • A non-fire rated boundary is defined as a fence, wall, hedge or vegetation.

  • A non-fire rated boundary must be 760mm away from the oil tank.

  • A non-fire rated building must be 1.8 meters away from the oil tank.

  • Any screening, including trellis, plants and foliage used to screen the oil tank must be 600mm away from the oil tank.

Fire Rated Buildings and Boundaries

  • A fire rated building and boundary is more than 30 minutes fire protection.

  • A fire rated building and boundary is defined as being without openings within 1.8 meters of the oil tank.

  • Fire rated boundaries must extend 300mm at both ends of the oil tank and 300mm above for the whole length of the oil tank.

Building Eaves and Flue Terminals

  • Eaves of a building must be 1.8 meters away from the oil tank.

  • Eaves less than 1.8 meters away from the oil tank require fire protection.

  • Flue terminals must be 1.8 meters away from the oil tank.

Oil Tank Base and Platform

  • A fire rated ground base must extend 300mm on all sides of the oil tank.

  • A fire rated platform must extend 100mm on all sides of the oil tank (In conjunction with a 300mm fire rated ground base)

  • If no fire rated ground base is provided, a fire rated platform must Extend 300mm on all sides of the oil tank.
